Abstract

The composite materials have found widespread applications in aircraft, automobiles, sports, space, and defence industries. Understanding the cure behavior as well as resulted thermo-mechanical properties of a thermosetting system are essential in the development and optimization of composite fabrication processes. In this paper, HCU200/A45 carbon fiber prepreg along with HinpoxyC, HinpoxyVB, ARL135 and ARL136 epoxy resin systems with suitable hardeners are used for the development of composites and their characterization. The DMA, isothermal and dynamic modes of DSC, Kissinger equation and the universal tensile test are used to determine various thermo-mechanical properties of composites namely glass transition temperature, heat of reaction, degree of cure, activation energy, pre-exponential factor and tensile strength. Abstract

The aim of this project is to design a vibrating screen with vibromotor by which we can get the efficient screening process in the batch mix plant. To fulfill requirement of vibrating screen 50 Hz frequency vibromotor is selected. Maximum amount of vibration is expected from vibrating screen. Hence, it is required that natural frequency of the vibrator screen should be as near as possible to vibromotor natural frequency. Various iterations have been performed in design of vibrating screen to bring its natural frequency close to 50 Hz. To improve damping property of base support, spring support is designed and analyzed. Analy-sis results are within the permissible limits. Finally, fatigue analysis is done for whole screen and support. Results of analysis shows that frequency, displacement and stresses are within the limits.

Abstract

A feedwater heater is a heat exchanger designed to preheat boiler feedwater by means of condensing steam extracted from a steam turbine. High pressure feedwater heater is employed just before the boiler so that the water fed to the boiler is preheated and at higher pres- sure. This increases the boiler efficiency as thermal shock is reduced. The aim of the present work is to analyze the junction of Channel shell, which contains the feedwater, to nozzle junction. Abstract

Purpose of the vibrating screen is to separate material in different sizes according to the requirement. This can be achieved by producing vibration with the exciter mechanism. The side wall plate of the vibrating screen is subjected to fatigue loading condition and critical zone is prone to initiate crack. This fatigue crack propagates and reach to its critical level and leads to the final failure of a plate. In order to prevent catastrophic failure and to save replacing and maintaining cost, it is highly required to identify critical zones in a plate where chances of initiation of cracks are more. This can be achieved by designing the plate from basic principles of the fatigue and fatigue crack growth for given loading conditions. The aim of present work is to identify complete loading condition and stress level of the side plate. First part of the present work involves the analysis of cracked and uncrack plate for given loading condition and critical values of stress and loads are found. The analysis is done using finite element technique and results are compared with acceptance criteria. In second part above results of the finite element analysis are utilized for redesigning and analyzing the vibrating screen for modification. The best design for the vibrating screen is proposed after various iterations and modifications. The different parts of the mechanism are modeled and assembled using CAD software and analysis is carried out using ANSYS software. The results for structural analysis of structure are found within permissible limits.

Abstract

In the present work, the effect of interphase between nanofiller materials and base metal materials has been analyzed. The analysis has been performed to analyze the possible enhancement of mechanical properties in the presence of interphase between nanofiller material and base metal material of resultant nanocomposites. The carbon nanotube (CNT) and single-layer graphene sheet (SLGS) have been used as nanofiller materials. The 3-dimensional continuum solid modeling-based simulation approach has been considered for the analysis, which can easily model the bonding between base materials and interphase as well as bonding between interphase and nanofiller material. Also, the CNT/SLGS-based metal matrix composites are analyzed to analyze the effect of interphase due to variation in size of the nanofiller materials (variation in outer radius of CNTs and variation in width of the SLGSs) on the elastic and shear moduli of the metal matrix nanocomposites. The presented 3-dimensional continuum solid modeling-based simulation approach has been validated by comparing obtained results with the analytical results based on the continuum solid mechanics-based formulations (rule of mixture). The obtained results depict that the consideration of interphase between nanofiller material and base metal material enhances the elastic and shear moduli of resultant metal matrix nanocomposite. And, the variation in size of nanofiller material affects the overall mechanical properties of resultant metal matrix nanocomposites. Also, the obtained results depict that the effect of variation in outer radii of CNTs is found more significant compared to the variation in width of SLGSs. As the presented 3-dimensional continuum solid modeling-based simulation approach reduces the complexity of the analytical formulations, it is found to be an efficient tool for mechanical characterization of metal matrix nanocomposites in the presence of interphase.

Abstract

This paper illustrates the variation in the natural frequencies of different modes of vibration considering the different types of waviness of the atomic structures of single walled boron nitride nanotubes (SWBNNTs), i.e., sinusoidal, elliptical and parabolic. The waviness present in the atomic structures of SWBNNTs causes a variation in the localized stiffness in waviness regions, thereby affecting the natural frequency of the SWBNNTs. Thus, it is important to understand the effects of the different types of possible waviness present in the atomic structures of SWBNNTs on their natural frequency. A vibrational analysis was performed for the bridged configuration (with both ends fixed) of SWBNNTs. Continuum modelling based analytical and finite element method (FEM) simulation approaches were used to estimate the natural frequencies of SWBNNTs with different types of wavy curvatures. The FEM approach reflects the shear deformation on the natural frequency of wavy nanotubes, whereas inclusion of shear deformation in the analytical approach adds complexity to the model, which requires more computational time for analysis. The obtained results indicate that the sinusoidal curvature of wavy atomic structures of SWBNNTs is more sensitive compared to the parabolic and elliptical curvatures of wavy nanotubes. Mode shape analysis is also found to be useful for estimating the type of curvature in the atomic structures of the nanotube. As presented herein, understanding the effect of waviness on the variation in the natural frequency of the wavy atomic structure of SWBNNTs is found to be useful for the practical realization of wavy atomic structure based nano-mechanical resonators for applications such as in sensor systems on the nano-scale level.

Abstract

This paper deals with experimental and modelling studies carried out for different Equivalence Ratio(ER). Seven different ER (0.24e0.386) were selected to investigate the downdraft gasifier performance.The lignite and sawdust briquette (70:30, %wt.) were used as feedstock in a 10 kWe atmospheric pressuredowndraft gasifier. The fuel consumption and air consumption were observed to exist in the range of0.54 kg h1to 11.1 kg h1and 0.59 kg h1to 19.5 kg h1respectively. The Lower Heating Value (LHV) andgas yield were found to be 4.91 MJ Nm3and 2.99 Nm3kg1respectively at 0.386 ER. Tar and ParticulateMatter (PM) were found in the range of 516.3 mg Nm3to 565.23 mg Nm3and 47.86 mg Nm3to57.29 mg Nm3respectively for different ER. The CGE observed was 80.03% whereas the tar and PM werereported as 516.3 mg Nm3and 47.86 mg Nm3respectively at ER of 0.386. A thermo-equilibrium modelwas developed to estimate the producer gas compositions and LHV. The results were compared with theexperimental results from the literature and good agreement between the two was observed.

Abstract

The gradual reduction of world petroleum reserves, growths in prices of petroleum-based fuels and environmental pollution has increased attention to the search for unconventional fuels such as biodiesel. It has remained the focus of an extensive amount of research since it is renewable and reduces the emission of pollutants. Though, some of the significant issues like compatibility of biodiesel with the crankcase lube oil, thermal stability of lube oil with biodiesel, changes in physical and chemical properties of lubricating oil with biodiesel, etc. have not been adequately inspected. These requirements are to be addressed in order to confirm the long-term suitability of biodiesel in a current family of diesel engines. In the present work, these problems are addressed. With an overall objective of life cycle analysis, a long run endurance test (512 h) is carried out on CI engines fuelled with diesel and the optimized blend of bio-diesel fuel (B20A4) respectively. The endurance tests are directed as per IS 10,000 for the examination of wear of engine components, lubricant's properties, suspended impurities, and wear metal debris. The wear of the various component of the engine is characterized by dimension and weight measurements. Lube oil analysis (Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy – AAS, Ferrography) were performed on oil samples, taken after every 128 h. The oil analysis suggested that the wear of B20A4 fuelled engine is substantially lower compared to the diesel. A regression model was also proposed to predict the wear of the engine. The proposed regression model can be taken one step further to predict the overall wear of the engine. The total concentration of various metals debris collected in the lube oil sample (predicted using regression model) was found to be 640 mg/kg and 420 mg/kg for diesel and B20A4 respectively.

Abstract

Gasification is a thermochemical conversion of carbonaceous biomass into the producer gas. Gasification of lignite, wood, sawdust briquette, and their mixtures are investigated on a 10 kWe laboratory scale downdraft gasifier at atmospheric pressure. The air is used as a gasifying medium. The gasifier was operated on different particle sizes of lignite and lignite-wood ratio; 22–25 mm lignite particle size and lignite – wood ratio (70:30, w/w) were found to be optimum to overcome clinker formation and higher Cold Gas Efficiency (CGE). To avoid unwanted maintenance, it is essential to diminish the producer gas pollutants such as tar and particulate matter (PM) before injecting the producer gas into a turbine or a gas engine. A setup was developed to measure tar and PM from the producer gas. The gasifier performance was evaluated on various parameters such as tar, PM, fuel consumption, gas yield, gas composition, gas calorific value and CGE for all selected feedstock. The tar in the producer gas was found in the range of 201.30 mg Nm−3 to 617.80 mg Nm−3 whereas PM was found in the range of 36.76 mg Nm−3 to 68.35 mg Nm−3. CGE and gas calorific value were observed in the range between 64.99% and 71.62% and 4.64 MJ Nm−3 to 5.29 MJ Nm−3, respectively. Specific fuel consumption (SFC) was obtained in the range of 1.52 kg kWh−1 to 1.84 kg kWh−1. CGE with lignite – wood or sawdust briquette ratio (70:30, w/w) is found maximum whereas tar and PM are found minimum with wood and sawdust briquette feedstock in the present study.

Abstract

However, it also shows that even optimized blend (B20) is not able to meet stringent emission norms - particularly for NOx - set by EURO IV. For the further reduction of the NOx, DEE is added from 0% to 5% in B20. The results show that the addition of 4% DEE, does not significantly influence the engine performance, however reduction in NOx found to be 40% compared with diesel fuel. A hypothesis is proposed that "The reduction in engine emission is due to improvement in combustion in presence of DEE". The hypothesis is validated through combustion analysis showing an increase in peak pressure (Pmax) by 7% and a reduction in delay period by 1.5 degrees with the addition of 4% DEE in B20.

Abstract

When a pump is running in turbine mode, susceptibility to cavitation increases, and it may be more severe than that in conventional hydro turbines. To accomplish the basic aim of making a compact machine with a high setting, a certain amount of cavitation can be allowed, then the erosion risk may be predicted. In the present study, experimental investigations were carried out on cavitation characteristics of a pump running in turbine mode in the nondimensional speed (N∗) range of 0.64–1.07. For cavitation analysis, an additional suction creation system was installed, and different techniques were applied for cavitation detection viz pressure measurement, visual inspection, and vibration analysis. The performance of pump as turbine was found better in the N∗ of 0.71–0.86 in terms of higher efficiency and lesser possibility of cavitation. From the sigma test, the critical value of σ was found as 0.595. The study revealed that, when a pump is operated as a turbine, it might be suffering from traveling bubble and von Karman vortex cavitation near impeller blades and vortex rope cavitation in the draft tube.

Abstract

Gasification of lignite and waste wood mixtures is investigated in an atmospheric pilot-scale (10 kWe)downdraft gasifier, employing air as the gasifying medium. The system was originally designed and built for lignite fuel. The gasifier was operated on various lignite particle sizes; 22e25 mm particle size was found favorable. However, clinker formation was observed during operation of gasifier using lignite as a fuel. Other issues were clinker formation, bridging or channel burning, erosion, and corrosion due to the high ash content of lignite, etc. The co-gasification study was intended to minimize the clinker formation along with improvement in the producer gas heating value. In order to do so, experiments with a mixture of waste wood-lignite were carried out. Mixture ratios of 10%e90%, 20%e80% and 30%e70% (w/w) of waste wood-lignite were investigated and results of co-gasification experiments were compared to lignite only gasification. The lignite and wood particle size was 22e25 mm and 50505mmrespectively. The gasifier performance was evaluated on various parameters namely, specific gas yield, efficiency based on energy and exergy, fuel consumption rate and gas composition. Mass and energy balance was carried out for gasification of lignite and its mixture with waste wood. With increase inwood percentage, the clinker formation reduced and almost became negligent with wood percentage reaching to 30%. The energy efficiency, exergy efficiency, LHV (Lower heating value) of gas and gas yield increased by 8.92%, 11.66%, 6.31%, and 9.33%, respectively.

Abstract

As an alternative fuel for compression ignition engines, biofuels are in principle renewable and carbon unbiased. However, their use raises technical, economic and environmental issues. A complete technical review on the use of biofuel (pure oil/blend with diesel/blend with diesel in the presence of additives) in CI engines based on performance and emission comparisons with diesel fuel is carried out in this work. It is observed that biofuel seems to be a good option to substantially reduce environmental emissions. Although the majority of biofuels can be used in CI engine without any modifications, change in operating parameters (injection timing, injection pressure & compression ratio) is advisable for improvement in engine performance. Moreover, short-run studies show that biofuels have great potential to replace conventional diesel fuel, the review suggests that biofuels produce various problem when used for an extended period of times. Especially, in this study particular attention is focused on the long run test (life cycle analysis) of CI engine fuelled with biofuels. The study suggests that use of biofuels produces various tribological issues on key components of CI engine. In the literature the tribological studies were discussed with atomic absorption spectroscopy, surface roughness analysis, wear analysis, close microscopic image analysis, etc. of the CI engine components.

Abstract

The response surface method is adopted to express the output parameter (brake thermal efficiency) as a function of engine parameters including compression ratio (CR), injection pressure (IP) and injection timing (IT). The range of engine parameters selected is: 16 ≤ CR ≤ 18; 180 ≤ IP ≤ 220 bar; 15° ≤ IT ≤ 250 BTDC. It is shown that the proposed Box–Behnken design required only 15 runs of experiments for the response surface between output parameters and engine parameters. Using ‘Design Expert’ software, 2D and 3D plots are generated. Such plots give an idea of the domination of process variables and exhibit the trend of interaction between the variables. Moreover, a statistical significant test (ANOVA) is carried out to develop a ‘Regression Model’. The results of ANOVA suggested that the proposed ‘Regression Model’ is the best fit with Standard Deviation of 0.093, Adjusted R2 of 0.9619 and Adequate Precision of 19.686. Further the validation of ‘Regression Model’ is carried out by comparing the predicted values of thermal efficiency with that of experimental observations. The comparison suggested that the model is robust enough to predict the thermal efficiency of the CI engine over a wide range of operating conditions with an error of less than 1%. Finally an optimum combination of engine parameters i.e. CR = 18, IP = 220 bar and IT = 200 before top dead centre is proposed.

Abstract

The major limitations of mini/micro hydropower schemes are the higher cost of small capacity hydro turbines. Also, it is very cumbersome, time-consuming and expensive to develop the site-specific turbines corresponding to local site conditions in mini/micro hydro range. In such plants, small centrifugal pumps can be used in turbine mode by running in the reverse direction. The efficiency of the pump as turbines (PATs) is usually lower than the conventional hydro turbines; however, there may be a substantial decrease in the capital cost of the plant. Hydropower plants usually run at part load for several months in a year due to insufficient water availability for the power generation. The application range of PAT can be widened if its part load and/or maximum efficiency can be improved. In the present study, experimental investigations are carried out on centrifugal pump running in turbine mode to optimize its geometric and operational parameters e.g. impeller diameter and rotational speed. The experiments were performed in the wide range of rotational speeds varying from 900 to 1500 rpm with original (∅ 250 mm), 10% trimmed (∅ 225 mm) and 20% trimmed (∅ 200 mm) impellers. Impeller trimming led to the improvement in efficiency at part-load operating conditions. The performance of PAT was found better at the lower speeds than that at the rated speed. The effects of blade rounding were studied in all the cases and it led to 3–4% rise in efficiency at rated speed with the original impeller. The empirical correlation is also developed for prediction of efficiency in terms of impeller diameter and rotational speed in non-dimensional form.

Abstract

In this work, an experimental study of the gasification of lignite with various particle sizes was carried out in a pilot-scale (10 kWe) downdraft type fixed bed gasifier. The main objective of the study was to investigate the feasibility of the lignite as a fuel for downdraft gasifier and to evaluate the effect of the particle size on gasifier performance. The influence of the particle size on the fuel consumption rate, temperature profile in the various zone, gas yield, gas composition, and cold gas efficiency was studied. Six different particle sizes viz. 13–16 mm, 16–19 mm, 19–22 mm, 22–25 mm, 25–28 mm, 28–31 mm were selected for experimental work. With the increase in particle size, the reduction in fuel consumption rate was observed, whereas the producer gas production rate had increased. The heating value of the gas increased as particle size increased from 13–16 mm to 22–25 mm and the same had decreased with increase in particle size. The higher temperature in the reduction zone resulted in higher H2 and CO contents in producer gas. Under the experiment conditions, the fuel consumption rate, gas yields, LHV (Lower heating value) of gas fuel and cold gas efficiency varied in the range of 9.58–10.67 kg/hr, 2.43–2.63 Nm3/kg, 3.33–4.17 MJ/Nm3 and 51.5%–65.7% respectively. The experimental results showed that the gasification performance was better with the lignite particle size of 22–25 mm.

Abstract

In remote communities where it is not economical and practically possible to take the grid connection, stand-alone small hydro systems can be used to fulfill the energy requirement. Small-scale hydroelectric power systems are emerging as a promising source of renewable energy generation, but they require low cost hydraulic and electric types of equipment to make them economically feasible. In such plants, pumps can be used in turbine mode considering various advantages associated with pump e.g. ease of availability, proven technology, low initial and maintenance cost, availability for a wide range of heads and flows, etc. The efficiency of the pump as turbine (PAT) is usually lower than that of conventional hydro turbines. However, efficiency is not the primary selection criterion for such machines and it is recommended to operate such machines around maximum efficiency point. In the present study, different turbines suitable for micro-hydro power plants are discussed. The historical development of PAT is described. The review of the state-of-the-art of pump running in turbine mode is presented. Different pumps suitable to run in turbine mode for low capacity power generation in micro-hydropower plants as well as in water supply piping systems are discussed. Theoretical, experimental and numerical investigations carried out by different researchers on PAT are reviewed. The research work on PAT including criteria for selection of pump running as turbine, cavitation analysis, force analysis, loss distribution, various methods of performance enhancement, cost analysis of hydropower plant with conventional hydro turbine and PAT, applications of PAT in water supply pipelines, etc. are discussed. The worldwide implementation of PAT and different manufacturers of PAT are described. The limitations in the implementation of PAT, as well as the recommendations to improve the performance of PAT, are described. Abstract

The feasibility of extraction of phenol rich oil from the bio-oils obtained through pyrolysis of cashew nut shells and sugarcane bagasse is studied. The extraction rate of phenol rich oil using CO2 as a supercritical fluid is discussed. Operating parameters are optimized for the maximum concentration of phenol and cardanol. Higher yield of oil (50% by weight) along with higher concentration of phenols and cardanol by present method is found encouraging. The experiments were conducted in the pressure range of 120–300 bar, the temperature range of 303–333 K and the mass flow rate range of 0.7–1.2 kg/h. The process parameters are optimized to maximize the yield of extracts and its contents of phenols and substituted phenols from sugarcane bagasse pyrolysis oil. The oil samples obtained at various operating parameters are analyzed by Gas Chromatograph–Mass Spectroscopy (GC–MS) and Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR).

Abstract

A simple mathematical model to characterize the supercritical extraction process has been proposed in this paper. This model is primarily based on two mass transfer mechanisms: solubility and diffusion. The model assumes two districts mode of extraction: initial constant rate extraction that is controlled by solubility and falling rate extraction that is controlled by diffusivity. Effects of extraction parameters such as pressure and temperature on the extraction of oil have also been studied. The proposed model, when compared with existing models, shows better agreement with the experimental results. The proposed model developed has been applied for both high initial oil content material (cashew nut shells) and low initial oil content material (black pepper).

Abstract

This manuscript summarises the techno-economic feasibility of refined cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL). A simple mass transfer based mathematical model for the yield prediction is presented. The process parameters and extraction time for maximum profit and purity of the product were optimized. The optimum extraction time for maximum profit and purity was found to be 0.9 h at 300 bar and 323 K. The influence of the different costs, such as fixed cost, raw material cost, labor cost, utility cost, etc. on profit and cost of production of the extract is also presented.

Abstract

This work investigated the extraction of cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) using supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2). Effects of process parameters such as extraction pressure, temperature and flow rate of SC-CO2 were investigated. The yield of CNSL increased with increase in pressure, temperature and mass flow rate of SC-CO2. However, under different operating conditions, the composition of CNSL varied. The study of physical properties and chemical composition of the oil obtained through super critical fluid extraction (SCFE) showed better quality as compared to the CNSL obtained through thermal route. Experimental results were compared with diffusion based mass transfer model. Based on this simple model, extraction time was optimized.

Abstract

A two stage Gifford-Mc Mahon Cryocoolers are used to produce ultra-low temperatures in the range of 4 K to 40 K in the cryogenics experimentations. Commercially available G-M Cryocoolers have wide range of cooling capacity. Heat transfer analysis has been carried out in the present study on the G-M Cryocooler at no load condition by considering experimental observations as input data. The rated capacity of the G-M Cryocooler is 1.5 W at 4 K temperature. By producing 4 K temperature on the cryocooler at no load condition, the same has been analysed by heat transfer approach. All the modes of heat transfer has been calculated at steady temperature of 4 K with steady vacuum level in the range of 10-5 Torr. The calculated capacity of the Cryocooler has been found near to the rated capacity of 1.5 W at 4 K. The same approach can be made useful to calculate the capacity of ultra-low temperature refrigeration systems.

Abstract

The usage of internal combustion engines is increasing day by day to satisfy human thirst, which has led to consumption of fossil fuel at a drastic level contributing more than 80% human CO2 emission. As we know that the government norms are becoming stringent day by day due to increase in percentage of CO2 in the atmosphere. Reducing the global emissions of the internal combustion engines is a prime focus of this paper by decreasing fuel consumption. Friction in Internal combustion engines is mainly due to constantly abrading parts like Piston, Piston Rings, Cylinder Liner and other engine auxiliaries. Fuel consumption can scaled down by reducing friction between piston ring assembly and cylinder liner, which nearly accounts for approximately 20% of Engine losses. The friction in the ring assembly is mainly due to top ring (compression) friction which is maximum at T.D.C and B.D.C. positions. Friction can be reduced by analysing and experimenting various materials, shapes, sizes, coatings of the piston Rings for Internal Combustion engine. Model prediction indicated that by employing Skewed Barrel Profile with a positive twist, Taper napier Profile with negative twist and tapered ring with negative twist in the first, second and third piston rings grooves respectively reduces a considerable amount of friction of piston rings assembly, ultimately reducing the consumption of fuel and thereby reducing the emissions from internal combustion engines.

Abstract

The threat to cryogenic plant safety can be dependent on the extent of tritium contamination in the cryogenic helium circuit. There are some scenarios such as regeneration of cryopumps at high temperature e.g. 300 K and 470 K where tritium can handshake with cryogenic helium. The temperature and upstream partial pressure dependency on permeation are predicted in this paper. It has been found that permeation is dominant at temperatures over 300 K. The results also show that for 100 K regeneration of cryopumps there is no possibility of tritium contamination of the cryogenic helium circuit. However, for regeneration cycles at higher temperature i.e. 300 K and 470 K this can be a serious threat, considering partial or incomplete 100 K regeneration. The results predict that 60% or more efficient (which is easily achievable) 100 K regeneration is safe for complete 300 K regeneration cycles. But, to breach the safety cap i.e. 0.2 G Bq/annum or 5.6 × 10-7 gm/annum, even 11.2 mPa of tritium partial pressure at 470 K will take only 8 regeneration cycles to breach the safety limit of tritium in cryogenic helium. The paper also defines the allowable partial pressure of tritium at 300 K and 470 K regenerations required to avoid any tritium contamination to the cryogenic helium circuit.

Abstract

Bubble-induced vibration is a very crucial aspect in some critical systems like laser interferometer gravitational-wave observatory. Recently, laser interferometer gravitational-wave observatory detected the gravitational wave produced due to the merger of two black holes. To detect the other universe collision event due to other binary pairs like neutron stars, black holes or combination, the sensitivity of the detector should be very high. The sensitivity depends on the reduction of the noise present in the detector system / components. Liquid nitrogen cryopump is also one of the sources for the noise. This noise has been produced due to the bubble structure interaction. The present work analyzes the bubble generated noise spectrum level and its acoustic effect due to induced vibration. The spectrum levels considering force, acceleration, velocity, and displacement effect have been studied in detail for a thin annular fluid (LN2) filled cylindrical shell. It is assumed that the structure of cylindrical shell is homogeneous as well as isotropic. The noise level generated due to radial force excitation resulting from bubble collision has been found to be in the range of −85 dB to −45 dB at a lower resonance frequency.

Abstract

The present work focuses on the analytical determination of forces acting on a single spherical bubble during detachment due to pool boiling conditions in water and liquid nitrogen (LN2). Forces acting in X & Y directions have been evaluated and compared with that of bubble formation in LN2. Net vertical force existing with the LN2 bubbles after the detachment from the nucleation site has been found to be about one-third of the net force obtained by the vapour bubble in case of water as a working fluid. Also, in case of water, the net horizontal force is about 400% more than the detachment forces obtained for liquid nitrogen bubble. In addition to detaching forces, bubble departure diameter has also been evaluated using different models. It was found that the bubble diameter remains nearly equal for water and liquid nitrogen.

Bubble-induced vibration has become vital during recent investigation and advancement in the area of multiphase boiling. The induced vibration phenomenon can be understood with the help of proper and detailed understanding of vapor bubble formation, growth, collapse, and interaction with the surface. The growth mechanism for the formation of bubbles under nucleate boiling conditions is theoretically investigated. This paper also discusses the dynamics of vapor bubbles during flow in subcooled boiling conditions. In the part of the vapor bubble formation, the characteristics of a bubble emerged from the heated surface at a single nucleation site along with the flow boiling phenomena have been considered for analysis. The bubble is considered to be of spherical shape and detached from a heated surface due to the formation of a microlayer of liquid. The fluid is supposed to be static far away from a vapor bubble. Using well-known models of bubble formation and detachment, equations considering various forces acting over a single bubble have been derived. These equations monitor bubble characteristics in a definite manner according to the derived differential equation for energy conservation developed for the two-phase flow system. To illustrate this phenomenon, two bubble formation mechanisms, inertia-controlled and heat transfer-controlled growth have been considered. The present investigation discusses the governing equations for the bubble growth rate, bubble size and frequency, forces, and the well-known Rayleigh's equation. Also, the vibration characteristic has been reviewed, and the two phenomena, i.e., subcooled boiling induced vibration (SBIV) and flow-induced vibration (FIV) have been discussed in brief. The present review paper aims to reveal the latest evaluation done in the area of bubble-induced vibration and to ascertain the contributions made until now as well as the solution to the upcoming issues.

Experiments were conducted for pool boiling on the outside of 8 × 3 (eight rows and three columns) plain and coated tube (surface roughness = 8.279 μm) bundles for three different pitch distances with the distinct objective to study the behavior and the enhancement of boiling heat transfer in horizontal staggered tube bundles (of plain and coated tubes for different equilateral triangular arrangements) with heat flux values ranging from ∼12 to 45 kW/m2. At higher heat fluxes, coated and plain tube bundles had almost similar bundle average heat transfer coefficients at a given pitch distance, while at lower heat fluxes, the coated tube bundles have higher bundle average heat transfer coefficients as compared to that of the plain tube bundle.

The boiling in cross-flow is investigated for coated tubes (low-porosity, flame-sprayed) in this paper. The effect of surface roughness on flow boiling heat transfer for a horizontal tube surface in cross-flow is studied for saturated boiling of water at atmospheric pressure. The parameters varied were for flow velocity up to 3.24 kg/s (G = 258.49 kg/m2 s), heat flux from 12 to 45 kW/m2, surface roughness (Ra) from 0.3296 to 4.731 μm. Nominal enhancement in heat transfer coefficient at higher mass flux may be attributed to the continued nucleation at the uppermost surfaces (in the wake region of the flow) of the rougher tubes thereby increasing the overall heat transfer rate. The flow boiling data was found to best fit the Kutateladze asymptotic equation h = hl[1 + (hnpb/hl)n]1/n with the value of n = 2.258 (which is close to the value of n = 2 suggested by Kutateladze).

Abstract

Muskhelishvili’s complex variable method is used with least square boundary collocation method to derive the stresses in a plate with hole.
